Types of Standard Laser System Types

Fiber Laser Marking Systems

Fiber lasers are mainly used for marking heavy-duty metals and plastics and are considered more reliable and efficient than traditional lasers, such as YAG, CO2 and diode-pumped lasers. They lack internal optics, minimizing potential optical contamination risks. Fiber lasers are air-cooled, so they have no chillers, either. Their design includes master oscillator power amplifiers (MOPAs) using a seed laser to control the monolithic fibers during operation.

Our selection of Cobalt equipment includes:

  • Cobalt Dominator: leading desktop system effortlessly engraving stainless steel, the Dominator is a turnkey system incorporating several key features, such as a tunable pulse rate, high-speed galvanometer steering, a compact design, fixed marking and a 100,000-hour laser lifetime.
  • Cobalt XL: This stand-alone alternative is a fiber laser marking system that seamlessly meets your laser etching needs. It is Class 1 CDRH-safe with interlocking features. Its laser shuts off when the door opens for enhanced safety. The embedded Dell® tower allows you to complete any project without limitations, while the slide rail system makes changing over parts quick and easy. These are only a few features that make this fiber laser compatible with most applications.
  • Cobalt Marksman: Designed for the tactical industry, the Marksman has a patent-pending AR10 and AR15 fixturing system and is ideal for marking firearm components precisely and accurately. The system engraves serial numbers and other markings with easy-to-use automation features, including a removable table with a three-position docking rail, a high-power PC and high-speed galvanometer steering. It delivers high-contrast, impact-free markings.
  • Cobalt GEM: The GEM tabletop system engraves jewelry, ensuring the finest piece is etched with the required markings. It boasts a 20-watt IPG laser system, a nesting rotary mount, a spring-loaded chuck and a Dell® laptop with 16GB RAM and software to mark the material parameters, among other features.

CO2 Laser Marking Systems

This versatile laser system uses carbon dioxide (CO2) gas to create a beam that blasts through different materials while engraving, welding and coating others. When current-voltage or radio-frequency waves are introduced, the combination of CO2, argon, hydrogen, nitrogen and xenon produces a forceful laser beam.

These lasers mark organic and inorganic materials better than metals but can be used to engrave some anodized metals. CO2 laser systems generate heat that can cut through or engrave materials, depending on the laser’s speed and heat intensity, making them ideal for cutting high-absorption rate materials like plastic and glass.

These laser systems are used in numerous applications, including laser welding sheets and plates and engraving barcodes, serial numbers and logos. Our Dominator® CO2 laser system marks and cuts high-absorption rate and organic materials. This model has the same features and capabilities as our Cobalt Dominator but uses a CO2 laser.

UV Laser Marking Systems

The special ultraviolet lasers in these systems provide top-quality, high-resolution markings. Our Cobalt XL UV laser system uses less heat, making it perfect for engraving plastic, glass and some metals with detailed logos and designs.

Its versatility allows it to be used in several applications, including the medical device field, electronics and general manufacturing. The Dominator UV is the UV alternative to our all-inclusive Cobalt Dominator model, boasting more feature options than its fiber counterpart.

Pico Marking Lasers

Medical instruments must be marked clearly to prevent misuse. Picosecond or pico laser systems are preferred in the medical industry for marking medical devices. They are three times faster than fiber lasers, and their smaller beams engrave the finest details on medical instruments, producing non-reflective, high-contrast, permanent black markings.

These dark markings meet the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) medical device identification standards for accuracy and ineffaceability and have economic and other advantages. Our Cobalt RX XL laser system effortlessly meets medical industry needs.
