What Is Laser Welding?

  • Conduction welding: Occurs when the beam’s power density is less than 105 W/cm2, resulting in welds with a low depth-to-width ratio. It is ideal for delicate welds on thin materials.
  • Deep penetration/keyhole welding: Occurs when the beam’s power density is more than 106-107 W/cm2, resulting in welds with a high depth-to-width ratio. It is suitable for welding thicker materials that require robust joints
  • Laser spot welding: In this technique, the laser makes small, localized welds to join tiny, complex parts.
  • Laser seam welding: This technique creates long, continuous seams to form a fillet at the joints of the welded materials.

How Does It Work?

Laser welding directs a focused, collimated, high-intensity beam of light directly at the materials to be joined. The high-precision laser beam generates intense heat which melts the materials. Upon cooling, they solidify to form a seamless weld. CO2 Lasers

CO2 lasers operate by exciting carbon dioxide molecules with electricity to produce a laser beam. They are effective for welding various materials. However, it can be challenging to weld reflective materials such as stainless steel and titanium using these lasers due to the reflection of initial power that slows down the melting onset. Nonetheless, CO2 lasers offer a unique advantage in weld quality, especially on thicker materials.

Nd:YAG Lasers 

Neodymium-Doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (Nd:YAG) lasers are a type of solid-state laser that uses neodymium-doped YAG crystals as the gain medium. They are an older technology but can be effective for metal welding since they produce a light wavelength easily absorbed by metals. They can be operated in continuous or pulsed modes, giving them versatility for different welding requirements such as spot, seam and deep penetration welding.

 
 

What Materials Can Be Welded Using a Laser?

Laser welding’s adaptability makes it suitable for a wide range of materials such as:

  • Metals: Aluminum, stainless steel, copper, brass, titanium, silver and nickel are a few examples of metals that can be joined using laser beam welding.
  • Plastics: Lasers can effectively weld some thermoplastics such as polycarbonate, ABS and nylon to create seamless welds without adhesive. Low heating and highly localized melting should be applied for best results. In some applications, an additive can be mixed into the plastic to make it more laser-friendly.
